In the highly-anticipated season finale of HBO’s House of the Dragon, more than 9 million people tuned in on Sunday to watch the brewing drama between the Targaryens and Hightowers finally come to a head. That number makes it the largest finale night for HBO since Game of Thrones in 2019. It was up against Sunday Night Football and what ended up being the final game of the American League Championship Series. The viewership number includes both HBO and HBO Max viewing platforms.

Pulling 9 million viewers on the release day is impressive, considering that the finale was leaked online a few days before. Of course, people who watched the leak were treated to a grainy, unclear version of the episode. HBO Max streams House of the Dragon exclusively in 4k and utilizes Dolby Atmos for sound, making it a first for the streaming platform.

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and HBO Max, commented on the success of the show, “We’re so thrilled to see House of the Dragon catch fire with Game of Thrones fans around the world, as well as new viewers who are discovering the world of Westeros for the first time… congrats to George, Ryan, Miguel and the whole House of the Dragon team on an incredible first season.”

It’s also worth noting that outside of the United States, House of the Dragon exceeded season 8 of Game of Thrones viewership numbers in Latin America, Europe, Southeast Asia, Taiwan, and Hong Kong, making it the most viewed HBO title ever on an HBO streaming service. In addition, Catch-up viewers are also boosting the numbers of the series by bringing the average viewership to 29 million per episode in the United States alone.

Based on George R. R. Martin’s novel Fire and Blood, the series tells the history of the Targaryen Dynasty, taking place some 200 years before Game of Thrones. No word yet on when season 2 will air.
