Fans of The Hunger Games franchise can stand firm with the three-fingered salute as Lionsgate is expecting to begin filming for Sunrise on the Reaping this summer! Lionsgate announced the news at CinemaCon, along with unveiling a new logo for Haymitch Abernathy’s prequel story.

Lionsgate showed a small clip to attendees of flames seemingly swallowing a Mockingjay as it transformed into a snake. The strong symbolism blends with Woody Harrelson’s voice saying, “I think these games are going to be different.”

Harrelson, of course, played Haymitch opposite Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen, and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark in the original trilogy, and was an instrumental force in training the District 12 tributes on how to survive in the arena. This prequel offers the much-anticipated backstory for Haymitch as he enters and survives as the victor of the Second Quarter Quell, also known as the 50th annual Hunger Games.

Like the other films in this franchise, the movie will be based on Suzanne Collins's popular Young Adult novel series, Sunrise on the Reaping. Collins published Sunrise on the Reaping in March of this year.

Lionsgate has not released any significant details about the production. However, Billy Ray is returning to write the screenplay, and Catching Fire director Francis Lawrence is confirmed to be in the director’s chair. Shooting is expected to begin in July, with an approximate theatrical release date of November 20, 2026.
