Fans of Hollow Knight have been waiting for years for the ever-elusive sequel, Silksong. Announced more than six years ago, fans have waited for more information, speculating whether it will show up at any gaming-related event that comes. The latest bit of speculation has brought the marketing and publishing chief for Team Cherry, Matthew Griffin, to make a few short statements regarding the game, confirming Silksong is still in development.

The speculation started when Team Cherry co-director William Pellen changed his X profile picture to a chocolate cake on January 15, alongside a post that stated “Something big is coming. Keep your eyes closed tomorrow.” Something big did show up on January 16, but it had nothing to do with Silksong. It was the announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2.

Not content with Pellen teasing the Switch 2 announcement, expecting it to have relevance to Silksong, fans reverse image searched that chocolate cake, to find it featured as part of a recipe for Brooklyn Blackout Cake. The website that published the recipe, Bon Appétit, did so on April 2, 2024. The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement stated that a Nintendo Direct would reveal more on April 2, 2025. So, Silksong has to feature in the Direct, right?

Nope. Whatever changes and posts Pellen made on social media were not part of some alternate reality game, as Griffin has been making expressly clear this weekend. Firstly, through YouTuber ‘fireb0rn’, who posted Griffin’s message that “there was no Silksong ARG and that the changes to William’s account and the tweet were a nothingburger. Apologies to have misled everyone. The cake was a lie.” This was backed up by Griffin on the Hollow Knight Discord channel, where he added “It was still some impressive sleuthing skills by the fans… like ya’ll are WAY beyond those 2020 riddles now.”

And in reply to someone wondering whether Team Cherry had given up on Hollow Knight: Silksong, Griffin said, “Yes the game is real, progressing and will release.” Such confirmation has felt quite hollow to fans still waiting for news. This provided some excitement, but now it’s back to looking at future gaming events in the eternal hope that this will be the one.
