Jim Carrey Needs Money
The release date for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is rapidly approaching, and a witty bit of information regarding Jim Carrey’s return has been shared. Carrey plays Doctor Ivo Robotnik, the franchise’s main villain. Following the second film, the actor announced his intentions to retire; these plans changed, and he will reprise the role in the third installment. When asked by the Associated Press why he agreed to return as Doctor Robotnik, Carrey explained, "I came back to this universe because, first of all, I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch. And, you know, it’s just… I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly."
His character, popularly known from the games as the primary antagonist Doctor Eggman, is a scientist gone rogue with designs to become “the king of everyone.” After learning about Sonic, Robotnik wants to harness his powers for his plots. His ultimate goal is to conquer Earth, and later the whole of reality, and to be recognized for his genius. His most recent defeat sent the scientist into hiding, leaving his status unknown to Team Sonic.
