Pokémon Getting The 'Wallace & Gromit' Treatment
In a surprise announcement, The Pokémon Company has revealed a partnership with the British stop motion animation studio Aardman, best known for films like Chicken Run and many adventures featuring the characters of Wallace and Gromit.
In separate statements from Taito Okiura, VP of marketing and media at The Pokémon Company International, and Sean Clarke, managing director of Aardman, Okiura stated the collaboration was “a dream partnership” while Clarke emphatically spoke about Aardman’s thanks for being allowed to create a story within the beloved franchise that is Pokémon.
This announcement marks another step in a gradual period of experimentation by The Pokémon Company in the arena of producing more media content for the brand outside of their traditional focuses on video games and the various anime series and movies. Detective Pikachu was a big swing in 2019, which paid off for the corporation, and the recently released stop-motion Pokémon Concierge series on Netflix shows that they might have an interest in that specific medium if they are now also getting Aardman involved.
This also marks Aardman’s second project with a major franchise in a relatively short period, as they produced a short film for Star Wars: Visions Volume 2, which was released back in 2023.
Planned for release in 2027, it is currently unclear if this project will be a film or a series, though both are undoubtedly viable avenues for the mega-franchise that is Pokémon.
