Things are shaping up well for Warner Bros.’ A Minecraft Movie (2025). The film officially released on April 4, 2025, and it’s already doing numbers at the box office; between the Thursday previews and the Friday opening, it has raked in about $58 million thus far. According to Deadline, this jacks the film’s release weekend revenue estimate to over $135 million. These numbers give the film the potential to smash the video game movie opening record of $146.3 million set by The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023).
A Minecraft Movie (2025) is based on the open-world sandbox game Minecraft, developed by Mojang Studios. The film follows a small group that comes together after a series of major life events and ends up in the Overworld. They team up with the world’s other human inhabitant, Steve, to defend the Overworld from the piglins of the Nether who want to destroy it. A Minecraft Movie (2025) took the animated visuals of its parent game and turned them semi-realistic to be live-action, keeping the energy of a fun video game-themed film alive without making it too serious. The cast includes Jack Black as Steve, Jason Momoa as Garrett, Emma Myers as Natalie, Danielle Brooks as Dawn, and Sebastian Hansen as Henry.
