It looks like John Lithgow’s owl has dropped off his Hogwarts letter, as he has revealed his casting as Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television series, which is expected to premiere in 2026. Lithgow (3rd Rock from the Sun, The Crown) sat down with Screen Rant earlier this week to discuss being cast for the role, where he expressed his excitement at the career-defining opportunity, saying, “Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That's why it's been such a hard decision. I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes.”

The prolific actor, who has over 130 screen credits to his name, said, “It came as a total surprise to me. I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid.” Lithgow is the first casting decision to be revealed for the series, although neither Lithgow’s representatives nor HBO have responded to requests at this time for comment on the casting.

The plan at the present moment is to adapt one novel per season for the series, meaning seven seasons are expected in total. Francesca Gardiner (Succession, Killing Eve) is the showrunner for the series and is credited as a writer and executive producer for the project. The series is meant to be a “faithful adaptation” of Rowling’s novels. Other production participants at this time include Mark Mylod (Succession, Shameless) as a director for several episodes and an executive producer. J.K. Rowling herself will also be serving as executive producer for the series.
