LA Fires Cause Nominations For The Oscars To Be Pushed Back
One of the great early tragedies of 2025 is undoubtedly the Los Angeles wildfires that have been raging largely uncontrolled for several days, causing the deaths of at least 24 people, accruing billions of dollars of damage, and affecting the lives of everyone in the area. It’s certainly a dark way to start 2025. One of the odd ways it’s affecting things is, of all things, the Oscar nominations.
Because many people who vote live and work in Los Angeles, voting for the Oscar nominations has been pushed back two days to January 14th. Subsequently, the announcement of the nominees has also been pushed back from January 17th to the 19th.
So far there’s no indication that the ceremony itself will be postponed. It’s currently scheduled for March 2nd, so hopefully, the fires are well and truly put out by that point, and LA has begun the hard process of rebuilding life. The Oscars themselves aren’t the only thing in Hollywood that’s been affected by the fires. Many ceremonies, film shoots, and gatherings have also been postponed or cancelled altogether, such as the annual AFI Luncheon. For now, we can only hope that the fires are controlled as soon as possible.
