Lionsgate Bringing Critically Acclaimed 'Outlast' Video Game To Silver Screen
Horror fans have had much to get excited about over the last few weeks, and now we have even more good news. Lionsgate, known for its horror films like the SAW franchise, LONGLEGS, and The Blair Witch Project, just to name a few, is bringing the iconic horror video game franchise Outlast to the big screen. Horror video game adaptations have been getting a lot of attention since the massive success of The Last of Us and Five Nights at Freddy’s, so it is no surprise to see more on the docket. Horror producer Roy Lee, known for his work on It and Late Night with the Devil, will produce the film, and J.T. Petty, who has worked on the story for the video game series, will be working on the screenplay.
The video game franchise was first released in 2012, and it became the blueprint for creating immersive games within the genre. It focused on themes of manipulation and abuse of power as each installment saw corrupt institutions exploiting people for their own horrifying purposes. The game has given fans deep lore that is going to give the film a jumping-off point, and will help them get to the core of the horror of the franchise. The game started as a single-player narrative-driven survival series that included the original game, prequel Outlast: Whistleblower, and sequel Outlast 2. This year saw the growth of the series with The Outlast Trials, which gave players a multiplayer experience that allowed up to four players to enjoy the game together. There are currently no hints at a director, cast, or release date for the film, but we will keep you up to date as we learn more.
