Madame Web swung into theaters as Valentine’s Day passed and President’s Day Weekend approached, and it fell a bit short in terms of box office performance. Its opening weekend, spanning over six days to account for the overlapping holidays, pulled in about $26.2 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter. At the time of writing this, the film has reached a domestic revenue of $27.83 million and a total revenue of over $53.57 million. Poor reception from critics, an extremely low Rotten Tomato score, and a C+ CinemaScore grade have set Madame Web up for a bumpy theatrical life.

This outcome more than dampens the immediate future for Sony’s attempt at spawning a franchise from the film. The plot touches on a major character’s birth; it will likely be a long time, if ever before this is explored based on performance thus far. The future is not entirely bleak!  According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new plans for a franchise will be determined based on another upcoming film’s performance. There are several upcoming titles for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) with release dates currently scheduled for the latter half of 2024: Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3. The success of the former will become evident with time and will likely be the franchise determiner, while the latter has precedence for decent box office success with Venom (2018) and Venom: Let There Be Carnage (2021).

Form an opinion on Sony’s Madame Web for yourself; the film is making its theatrical run for the time being. It will eventually end up on the Canadian-based streaming platform Crave, but a specific release date has yet to be announced. The film follows Cassandra Webb as she discovers her ability to see the future. She must protect a group of three women from a deadly threat in the process.
