Nintendo Finally Shows Us The Official Switch 2
The day has finally arrived. What was foretold in many (so many) leaks over the last year has come to fruition. Earlier this week NateTheHate leaked that Nintendo would be revealing the Switch 2 (which is now, finally, officially, the name of the successor) on Thursday, January 16. He was right.
While sparse on technical details, the short, nearly two-and-a-half-minute trailer seemed to confirm nearly every leak that has come out about the successor to the wildly successful Nintendo Switch. The handheld screen is bigger. The kickstand in the back is u-shaped and now folds back even farther for a wider viewing angle. Joycons are now bigger, as a result of the screen increasing, but also no longer slide into place. Instead, it seems they plug in magnetically. It also looks like there is a USB-C port on the bottom of the unit now, possibly being the jack for the docking station. At the top of the device is the usual volume and headphone jack, as well as another USB-C slot, likely for a controller (perhaps another pro controller?).
The only game shown was Mario Kart, which was rumored to be launching with the game. It doesn’t state what the title of the Mario Kart is, but it seems that it could be a launch game. Near the end of the trailer, there were some slides with information. For one, there will be a Nintendo Switch 2 Direct on April 2. This squashes the possibility of the launch happening in March (which is when the Switch launched), and the release date just says 2025. It did state that the Switch 2 will play physical and digital Switch games, though some may not be compatible. There will also be a series of events to be able to get hands-on experience with it, but none were specified. With the Tokyo Game Show coming soon, expect that to be a main feature.
Strap in, it’s about to be a really interesting year in video games.
