Popular ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Group, ‘Critical Role,’ Publishing Two New RPG Systems
Critical Role is a weekly Dungeons and Dragons show that streams on Twitch and YouTube. They are currently on their third campaign, and their company just keeps growing. They have recently created Darrington Press, where they publish various books and games. In the new “State of the Press” on their YouTube channel, they announced two new roleplaying games and a new board game.
Illuminated Worlds is a new roleplaying game system that is designed for short, arc-driven campaigns. Based on the d6 dice pool system, it is flexible and can be used with any type of setting. The game is created by Stras Acimovic (who also developed Band of Blades and Scum and Villany role-playing games) and Layla Adelman.

Created by Critical Role producer Kyle Shire, Queen By Midnight is described as a battle royale deck-building game. The players are powerful princesses who battle it out in a magical free for all. When the clock strikes midnight, only the most powerful princess will be crowned the next Midnight Queen. Each of the princesses has its own vibe and playstyle, and there is a little something for everyone. The game is currently up for preorder and costs $69.99.
Daggerheart has the least information about it, besides the fact that it will be a “fun and fresh update to the fantasy genre of RPGs.” This game appears to be built for more long-term play and character progression. It could be Critical Role’s own version of Dungeons and Dragons, but we won’t know for sure until more information is released.
All three games will be available to demo at GenCon in Indianapolis starting August 3rd.
