The performers’ union, SAG-AFTRA, is negotiating an ongoing strike with video game companies. The unions’ major source of concern is loopholes allowing for abuse, as they cite several potential instances of AI being used and developed based on a single performance. Such a process would see actors’ voices being used beyond the extent of their contract and without further payment from the privilege. The union shared this warning with their members. Though progress has been made and agreements have been reached on certain provisions since we launched our strike last year, the last proposal the bargaining group made is still filled with alarming loopholes that will leave our members vulnerable to AI abuse.”

In response, a spokesperson for the video game companies shared this official statement, “We have proposed a deal that includes wage increases of over 15% for SAG-AFTRA represented performers in video games, as well as enhanced health and safety protections, industry-leading terms of use for AI digital replicas in-game and additional compensation for the use of an actor’s performance in other games. We have made meaningful progress and are eager to return to the bargaining table to reach a deal.” The strike began eight months ago, and while both sides concede to progress, it’s unclear if this new offer is sufficient for SAG-AFTRA’S needs.
