'The Acolyte' Will Acknowledge Most Eras Of 'Star Wars' History
Star Wars is returning to Disney Plus with a new Acolyte series focused on the High Republic era. As such, it takes place 100 years before the prequels. Amandla Stenberg who plays Mae alongside Lee Jung-jae’s Jedi Master called it “a prequel to the prequels. She said, “The prequels have this kind of prestige to them, this monarchical vibe. So one of my main questions going in was: are we going to maintain that sensibility? And yes, in many ways we do, while also incorporating elements that feel really contemporary and relatable.”
Series creator Leslye Headland confirmed that although the series takes place in the distant past it will contain nods to every Star Wars era. Headland explained, “It’s a show packed with everything I wanted to explore: I wanted EU [Expanded Universe] stuff in there, references to the original trilogy, The Phantom Menace, the Disney sequels.”

Headland described the nature of the story as being slightly different from other stories in a galaxy far, far away. The show is a mystery series that will unfold over time. Headland compared it to the Netflix series Russian Doll and called it a “spiral of storytelling.” Headland continued, “This is a much larger landscape, but it similarly tackles the idea of 'your eyes can deceive you'. You’re going to think the show is one thing, but then it’s going to gearshift into something else, and then do it again.” The mystery in Star Wars The Acolyte will begin on June 4 on Disney Plus with new episodes weekly.
