Tony Gilroy Talks About How 'Andor' Season One Success Affected Season Two
Tony Gilroy, showrunner for the D+ original Star Wars series, Andor, recently spoke to the media outlet Empire about how the success of the first season of the critically acclaimed series paved the way for funding and more creative control in the upcoming and final season of the series.
“The critical appreciation of the show was really helpful, if not essential, in helping Disney choke down the price of what this is,” Gilroy told the outlet.
Andor specifically focuses on Cassian Andor, introduced in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Diego Luna, who portrayed the titular character in Rogue One, reprised his role as Cassian in the first season and will be returning in the second season, along with Alan Tudyk, who portrayed his droid counterpart K2-SO in the film. Ben Mendelsohn will also be returning as Imperial Director Orson Krenic. The events of season one occurred several years before the movie, showing how he eventually joined the fledgling Rebel Alliance.

The second season will feature more of Cassian as he becomes part of the Rebel Alliance, as well as the lead-up to the events of Rogue One, where he and others became Rebel heroes by sacrificing their lives to steal the plans of the (first) Death Star. Unlike the first season, which had a more linear story, the second season will also feature time jumps to bring the storyline closer to the events of Rogue One, showing Andor at different points in time, similar to the time jumps featured in the first season of HBO’s House of the Dragon series.
The first season won critical acclaim from Star Wars fans and multiple Emmy Nominations for Best Drama Series, Writing for a Drama Series, and Directing for a Drama Series. Fans expecting more of the same will likely be glad to hear that Gilroy was firmly in control of the creative process for the latest season.
“In terms of creative notes, no-one has come to me and said, ‘No, they shouldn’t say that,'" Gilroy said.
Season two of the series is expected to premiere exclusively on D+ in April 2025.
