'Ahsoka' Episode 3 Review

Sabine and Ahsoka

The biggest problem Disney has when it comes to their Star Wars and Marvel shows is the length. A lot of the time they have limited episodes, and short run times. In some cases this is okay especially if the show gets a second season, however, a lot of time things won't get wrapped up, and viewers are left wanting more. This was the case with this week's Ahsoka. The episode was once again incredible but left me wanting more.

This episode focused primarily on Sabine and Ahsoka, and it was nice to see the two of them together again, acting like the friends they once were. We get insight into Sabine’s Jedi training. After her first training run, Huyang admits that she didn’t do well, so Ahsoka tries a different method. She wants Sabine to see with more than just her eyes, so Sabine fights Ahsoka while wearing a mask. Later, Ahsoka explains the Force. She says that the Force is in everyone, but it takes talent and patience to use it. Sabine, if she keeps up her training, will be an unconventional Jedi, but as Huyang points out, Ahsoka comes from a line of unconventional Jedi, so Sabine would fit right in. She would also be one of the only Mandalorian Jedi, as the only one before her was Pre Vizla. It would be cool to see Sabine become the next Mandalorian Jedi.

We are brought to Hera, who is meeting with a New Republic council, that includes Chancellor Mon Mothma. Yes, that’s right, it is now Chancellor Mon Mothma, and it’s the first time we see her in this role. After the role she played in the Rebellion, she deserves it. Hera mentions the event that occurred on Corellia, and how she thinks it's a more extensive operation that involves Thrawn. The New Republic unfortunately turns down her request for a small fleet. She leaves, and we finally get to see Jacen Syndulla in live action for the very first time. He has his signature green hair, even though it's a bit darker, but he looks great. He also seems to be good friends with Chopper, which probably ends in destruction every time the two of them are together. Ahsoka, Huyang, and Sabine all travel to the Denab system, where they discover the Eye of Scion. A battle ensues with Shin Hati and Marrok chasing them. An exciting space battle occurs, as Sabine and Ahsoka get closer to the Eye of Scion. Ahsoka even goes out on the ship to pick off the squadron chasing them. She managed to take one down with her lightsabers, which was pretty cool. Sabine shooting the lower gun, also reminded me a lot of Luke’s first time firing one of those. Whether or not it was intentional, it was a great callback. In one of the most exciting moments of the episode, we get to see the purgill, and they help Ahsoka, just like they helped Ezra. The episode ends with Baylan Skoll sending out a search party.

The live-action casting is one of the show's strongest points. Rosario Dawson is great as Ahsoka, and Natasha Liu Bordizzo shines as Sabine. She brings Sabine to live action well, but also gives her a new spin on the character. David Tennant is also great as Huyang. He feels different from the droids we’re used to seeing in Star Wars, but a welcome addition. Dave Filoni wrote the series and cares deeply about Ahsoka Tano. That is evident in the writing of the show as well. He has done such a wonderful job bringing this character to live action. The musical score, done by Kevin Kiner once again stands out.  The Ahsoka theme song is one of the best, and I wish it were longer.

Jacen Syndulla

Ahsoka episode 3 is a great continuation of last week's episode. The threat of Thrawn is becoming much more real. My biggest issue with this week's episode however was that it was too short. There definitely could’ve been about 10 more minutes added to make it feel complete. I know they are building the reveal up for suspense, but I want to see Thrawn. However, when we do see him for the first time, the wait will have been worth it, I just hope it comes soon. The first three episodes of Ahsoka have been amazing and now comes the hardest part-waiting to see what’s in store for us next week.

New episodes of Ahsoka are released every Tuesday at 6 PM PST/ 9 PM EST on Disney+.
