‘Barbie’ Spoiler-Free Review
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie hit theaters this weekend and did not disappoint! The film is currently the number one movie in the world and has the potential to become one of Warner Bros. Discovery’s highest-grossing films. While many fans thought the film would be lighthearted and silly, we got a film full of important messages about life as a woman and life in general.
Greta gave fans of the original animated Barbie movies like Barbie in the Nutcracker, Barbie in the 12 Dancing Princesses, and Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper the movie we have been begging for decades. Rather than following society’s ideas of Barbie and creating a character with little substance, Greta instead created a character true to who we all know Barbie really is. A powerful woman who loves others and wants to leave an impact on the world. Barbie was always a boss, and that was clear through the incredible variations of the doll we got over the years. The most important part of this film though is the reminder that Barbie is for everyone. The cast of both Barbies and Kens is so diverse and beautiful!
RELATED:
The film follows Barbie who lives in the picture-perfect world of Barbieland where every important role, including the President, is filled by a different Barbie. When Barbie begins questioning her morality, she starts to battle cellulite, burnt breakfast, and tears. Weird Barbie explains to her that the only way to return to her perfect world is to travel to the real world and cheer up the person playing with her. This was such a sweet direction to take the story because anyone that has ever played with Barbie can relate to how her story was fully dependent on how we were feeling at the time. Ken decides to tag along since his entire identity is linked to Barbie. The film centers around Barbie, but Ken also gets a pretty great storyline. As Barbie struggles with her identity and the realities of being a woman in our current society. Ken realizes that he has always been seen as an accessory to Barbie rather than her partner. As someone who grew up with Barbie and Ken dolls, it was nice to see him finally getting a little bit of attention. Also, his musical number and fashion were fantastic!
While the premise seems straightforward, I was surprised to find that I couldn’t guess what was going to happen next because there were so many different twists and moments that Greta included to remind us of just how amazing women really are and how hard we have to work for everything we achieve. There are so many raw human elements added to the film which makes it more impactful than anyone could have expected. The casting choices in this film are the best I’ve seen in decades, but the true star of the film is the writing. The dialogue is what makes this film so impactful because there is no mincing of words when it comes to these important topics. Of course, along with the more serious tones of the movie, there is plenty of light-hearted humor which made the movie well-balanced and enjoyable! This will be a favorite film of mine for years to come!
