The Star Wars universe is filled with notable characters, both heroic and villainous. All too often we see the stories of the super-powered flavor of these characters, especially those red lightsaber-wielding ones. Everyone just loves a good villain!

It is far too easy to overlook the nefarious individuals who often take a back seat to a spectacular lightsaber duel. Ignore these devious Imperials at your peril. They arguably did a lot more damage with the commlink, or Machiavellian scheme than any Sith Lord or Force wielder ever could.

7. General Veers

Maximillian Veers was a famous Imperial general during the Galactic Civil War. He was admired by his own troops, feared by his enemies, and even respected by his counterparts in the Rebel Alliance.

His unit was responsible for turning Admiral Ozzel’s mistake and potential failure into a victory on Hoth. Not only did his tactical and strategic skills win the battle, but he piloted the AT-AT himself as part of the assault on Echo Base. Even an errant snow speeder to the face was not enough to stop Veers from completing his mission.

6. Admiral Piett

One does not rise to the rank of commander of Darth Vader’s personal flagship without earning their keep. More importantly, one does not keep this post and their head easily. Firmus Piett was one such man. Over the course of the original trilogy, we see Piett as the epitome of the sneeringly arrogant, morally bereft, zealous Imperial who carries out his Emperor's wishes with chilling efficiency.

5. Vice Admiral Rampart

It takes a special kind of evil to stand out in a universe ruled by a cackling, scarred, space wizard who shoots lightning from his fingertips.

Vice Admiral Rampart stood out in this world by being the man who ordered the razing of Tipoca City, forever ending the cloning process that essentially won them the war against the Separatists. Rampart was an integral part of building the new Imperial Army on the smoldering ruins of the Clone Army. He was responsible for developing and implementing chain codes, an identification system that would make Big Brother himself hide behind Orwell’s coattails.

4. Moff Gideon

He was technically not an “Imperial” anymore when he first appeared on screen in the time period after the Battle of Endor. This tyrannical warlord is best known for being a sociopathic, skilled fighter whose quest involves vivisection and experimentation on our little Grogu.

Truly Evil.

3. Director Orson Krennic

Three things:

 - He was the brains behind the Death Star

 - He went toe to toe with the likes of Vader and Tarkin on a regular basis

 - He wears a WHITE CAPE STRIDING ACROSS BATTLEFIELDS IN SPACE.

Truly insidious.

2. Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin

Tarkin was the only man capable of “holding Vader’s leash.” He was a ruthless, clinical, brilliant, and capable fighter. Tarkin was deservedly feared by Rebels AND Imperials equally.

1.  Grand Admiral Thrawn

The fact that this blue-skinned Chiss rose up to the highest echelon of the famously xenophobic Imperial power structure tells you everything you need to know about Thrawn.

He is always in control in every single appearance (both canon and non-canon). His uncanny insight into his enemies made him one of the most feared Imperials in the galaxy. He is not only two moves ahead of you, but he has already moved on to the next game. You have already lost. you just haven’t realized it yet.
