Rainbow Six: Siege has been through a lot in its ten-year run. The game it was at launch is far different from the game it is now. It’s found a place among the popular hero-based multiplayer games that dominate streams and tournaments like Overwatch. The 5-on-5 tactical hero shooter, initially propped up to usher in an era of destructible environments, endured a rough start, but through dogged refinement, remains popular ten years on.

As any game that’s been run for ten years would be subject to, many frequently ask when the sequel is coming. Recently, it looked like Ubisoft would reveal that at the recent Six Invitational. Well, they revealed something, but it’s not a sequel.

Ubisoft revealed that what was actually in store was a major overhaul of the entire game. They’re updating everything, from graphics to game mechanics. They’re also promising new game modes and deeper tactical gameplay. But that’s about it because all that’s been shown is a teaser, teasing the date of March 13 for a full-on reveal. This will be a live event in Atlanta, Georgia.

Rainbow Six, the original game that launched in 1998, has evolved with each successive iteration of the game. The original took the tactical police shooter seriously. You would plan out your routes based on the intel you received about the situation. You could plot out the routes of your squad mates completely, from breaching doors, flashbanging rooms, and clearing them. It could be automated if you did it well. Now, it’s gone completely live-service and multiplayer, forcing players to communicate and try and predict what kind of opposition they are facing.

It’s a total mystery what the new version will entail, but they’d be rather stupid to scrap what’s worked for 10 years.
