A 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' Spinoff Starring Margot Robbie Was Cancelled By Disney

As much as fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise would love another film, it does not appear to be happening, at least not at this time. Margot Robbie was in talks to be the lead in a female-led spinoff of the series but mentioned in an interview with Vanity Fair that Disney has chosen not to proceed at this time. Robbie had been working with the writer, Christina Hodson, on the project idea as they had worked together on Birds of Prey. Back in 2020, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that Robbie was involved in the project but eluded that the project was in the discussion phases even then.

Of course, one does not think of these popular pirate movies without also thinking about Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. After all, he may be the worse pirate ever heard of, but we have all heard of him, have we not? A reboot of the series was in discussion as far back as 2019 in which Depp was likely being considered for the role. Unfortunately, as Depp’s public image suffered following the accusations of his ex-wife, Aquaman actress, Amber Heard the chances of fans getting to see a reprisal of his role became slim to none. The actor said openly during the defamation trial that he won, that Disney could not offer him enough money to come back at this point.

The film that Margot Robbie was hoping to make would have likely been more of a story from the female perspective based on the popular Disney theme park attraction of the same name. She said in her interview with Vanity Fair, “We had an idea and we were developing it for a while, ages ago, to have more of a female-led—not totally female-led, but just a different kind of story—which we thought would’ve been really cool,” Robbie said, “but I guess they don’t want to do it.” Fans of the Harley Quinn actress need not fear, she is set to be seen regularly on screen in the not-so-distant future. Her movie, Babylon is expected for release on December 23. She is also working on Warner Brothers’ Barbie as well as a, yet to be titled, prequel to the Ocean’s Eleven franchise
