‘Are You There God It’s Me, Margaret?’ Trailer Shows Off Judy Blume’s Classic Novel

Judy Blume’s 1970’s young adult novel, Are You There God It’s Me, Margaret? which has been enlightening pre-teens and helping them maneuver teenage years and puberty is finally coming to the big screen.
The recently released trailer touches upon all the major events from the beloved book as we see snippets of an 11-year-old Margaret, played by Abby Ryder Fortson, handling moving to a new neighborhood, learning about menstruation and bras, boys and figuring out her religious affiliation. She tries to enlist God’s help to keep things in her life normal. In navigating through the avalanche of changes in her life, she is aided by her loving mother, Barbara, played by Rachel McAdams, and her friends.

All these years, Judy Blume has closely guarded the book, which she described came ‘pouring out’ as she deeply connected with the protagonist. At a recent movie screening in New York, Blume said, “Right before I said yes, I said to my movie agent, ‘You can try to sell some of these books but not Margaret. Absolutely not Margaret,’” However, a “remarkable, passionate, funny, intimate letter” from Kelly Fremon Craig, the writer-director of The Edge of Seventeen, managed to convince Blume to turn her beloved novel into a movie, she said in an interview with the Today. And Fremon Craig did not disappoint as Blume found the film “wonderful.” She told Today,
“and the reason that it feels wonderful is because I love the movie. I think that movie is better than the book. I do.”
Are You There God It’s Me, Margaret? is written and directed by Kelly Fremon Craig. The film also stars Kathy Bates as Sylvia Simon, Margaret’s grandmother, and Benny Safdie as Herb Simon, Margaret’s father.
The much-awaited film is set to hit theaters on April 28, 2023.
