Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick film series, recently shared with The Hollywood Reporter his plans to reimagine the cult classic 1986 film Highlander. Henry Cavill is linked to the project as the lead, Connor MacLeod. Stahelski suggests the next film will be the first in many in developing the property.

“I think we have some very good elements now. The trick is when you have the tagline, ‘There can only be one,’ you can’t just kill everybody the first time,” Stahelski said, which is pretty sound logic coming from a filmmaker whose best work centers around Keanu Reeves killing a bunch of baddies to avenge his lost puppy dog.

Stahelski mentions his new reworking of the film series will include familiar characters. Still, his approach is slightly more calculated, saying, “We’re trying to do a bit of a prequel l– a setup to The Gathering – so we have room to grow the property.”

For those unfamiliar with the film and “The Gathering” event this is the infamous showdown between the last remaining highlanders dueling to the bitter end for there to “only be one.”

Stakelski remarks there will be many new ideas for the upcoming film, saying, “We have ideas for days for the coolest characters…I just think that’s rich mythology when you can pick any period of time, any nationality, any culture, any type of person and make them an immortal that have to duel and deal with the burden of immortality – that’s fucking cool.”

As to Henry Cavill taking over as MacLeod, Stahelski said, “The character’s arc spans hundreds of years, and he becomes many different personalities, all of which extend the timeline of his emotional growth. Then, during our first meeting [with Cavill], my suspicions were confirmed: Henry was immediately riffing off the idea of the burden of immortality, and you could see in his eyes that he can transform himself from being a young, vibrant soul to an old, wise soul. He had this combination I was fascinated by.”
