Daedalic Entertainment Is Shuttering Its Game Development Wing After Disastrous 'Gollum' Release
Daedalic Entertainment is the publishing company behind The Lord of the Rings: Gollum game, which had a mildly difficult release. Recently, the publishing company said they would be closing the doors of their Hamburg, Germany, studio responsible for the game. In a statement to Polygon, the company explained how Gollum “did not live up to the expectations.” They went on to confirm at least one more patch for the game will be released eventually. In a statement, as reported by GamesWirtschaft, this change is “a new beginning in the long history of Daedalic Entertainment.”
The company released a statement explaining that they will be putting a “full focus” on their “publishing business.” Daedalic continued, stating that they were “grateful for the opportunity and the learning experience.” They confirm that the follow-up game set in the Gollum universe has been discontinued. For those who lost their job due to this shuttering of the game developing section, they will provide support in relocating them to a different position within the company network.
After being delayed several times over several years, Gollum was released on May 25, 2023. The game originally intended to tell a story from the perspective of a unique perspective, bringing something fresh and new for Tolkien fans; while the intention was noble, the outcome wasn’t the smoothest. It had an issue with bugs, portions that were unsolvable, visual distortion, and game mechanic malfunctions. As of July 2, 2023, the game is still available for purchase on major consoles and PC.
