Dedra Meero and Syril Karn are two of the main antagonists of the Disney+ show Andor. Dedra is an ISB agent investigating the rise of the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire. Syril starts as a deputy inspector for Pre-Mor security, but gets fired after a job goes badly. These characters are played by Denise Gough and Kyle Soller respectively, and Kristin Baver interviewed the two of them for StarWars.com. Unlike their characters, who are intense and dedicated to the evil Empire, Gough and Soller appear to be affable and friendly, and they shed a lot of light on the motivations for their characters.

Meero and Karn are both wildly ambitious, and although things are going well for Meero, Karn is going through a rough patch. When Syril meets Dedra, he sees them as kindred spirits. He badly wants to work with her, thinking it will help his ambitions and get him back in the good graces of the Empire; unfortunately for him, Dedra sees him as inferior. She thinks he will hinder her rise through the ranks.

In the interview, they talk about how fun it is to play these fully fledged, nuanced characters. They are not the standard mustache-twirling villains; they have layers, and are almost sympathetic at many points in the show. One example is watching how Dedra deals with the sexism in the Empire. Another is looking at how Syril deals with an overbearing mother.

Gough and Soller, Meero and Karn, are key components of Andor’s success. They add the spice that raises Andor above most other shows.
