The D23 presentation from last September featured possibility, a dream of what could come in the future. Among these features was something that garnered a significant amount of applause: a villainous-themed land with iconic evil Disney characters intertwined. One of the company’s Imagineers, Chris Beatty, sat down with Entertainment Weekly, to talk about the future.

According to the Imagineer, the presentation was “a peek at some of the amazing things that could be coming”, meaning that nothing is concrete; however it is possible. He said that Josh D’Amaro, the chairman of the parks, was trying to “get across that spirit of creativity, of what could be next, of innovation, of the possibility of what could be is still alive and well at Disney and Imagineering.” When getting to the villain-themed part of the presentation, the audience reception was good. Beatty said that they “took note of how loud the applause was when [they] announced that."

Most Disney villains have had popularity for a long time, whether it be from memes or from the occasional “they were kind of right” realization. Following the release of Maleficent (2014), the widespread popularity of Disney villains saw a positive trend. The appreciation trickled to younger audiences as well a year later with the release of the Disney Channel original movie Descendants. There is a foundation for all ages to enjoy a villain-themed land.

Some of the plans discussed at D23 were a bit more concrete than others for Disney World. Their TRON Lightcycle-themed ride will open on April 4th. The reimagining of Splash Mountain, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, will open sometime in 2024.
