'Dog Man' Walks To An Impressive Opening Box Office
The tagline for the film, Dog Man is “Part man. Part dog. All hero.” The film can now also claim the title of “Surprise hit” right out of the doghouse, fetching a stellar $10.8 million across its opening day and preview screenings, with an expected weekend haul three times that amount at $35 million. The film, about a policeman and his faithful canine accidentally becoming fused during a lifesaving operation and resuming their fight against crime, was adapted from a series of children’s books written and illustrated by author David “Dav” Pilkey Jr.
Pilkey is also responsible for the book and spin-off children’s graphic novel series, Captain Underpants, which received a film adaptation in 2017 with Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. That film did surprisingly well, bringing in $23 million with its debut. Both films also appear to have been well-liked by audiences for both films, with Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie receiving an 87% score on the Tomatometer and 63% on the Popcornmeter. Dog Man has so far received comparable Rotten Tomatoes scores, receiving a 75% score on the Tomatometer and 86% on the Popcornmeter.
The film’s all-star cast includes Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, Poppy Liu, Lil Rel Howery, and Billy Boyd. This is DreamWork’s ninth film to be based on a children’s book. The trailer, which (appropriately) features Daft Punk’s “Harder Better Faster Stronger” can be seen here:
