Back in 2015, Bruce Campbell, known for playing Ash Williams in the Evil Dead live-action projects announced his retirement from the live-action role after Ash vs Evil Dead was canceled. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, he revealed that an animated reboot is on the way. Campbell said, “We are developing an animated version, like a series.” Although Campbell had to step back from the live-action performances, he wouldn’t shy away from voicing the role. Campbell explained, “I’ll do that. I’ll do Ash’s voice all day long because my voice hasn’t aged as much as I have.”

Campbell expressed the animated series would be more of a reboot than a remake, meaning it won’t have to follow the same canon as the original, and that is the series strength. He said, “We’re out of the cabin, Sam [Raimi] doesn’t have to direct, I don’t have to star as Ash. The trick is to take the elements that people like, which is innocent people being tortured by a malicious entity, and it’s people who have no skills to stop it.” In addition to the animated series, two live-action films are currently in development with Sébastien Vaniček directing one and Francis Galluppi directing the other. No further details are available for either the animated series or the upcoming films, but Campbell will star in the upcoming Hysteria series streaming on Peacock.
