Fiona Shaw And Diego Luna Break Down Their Character’s Relationship In ‘Star Wars: Andor’
While Andor has introduced a slew of new characters to the Star Wars universe, Diego Luna pinpoints one as having a significant influence on his character, Cassian Andor. That character is Maarva, his mother, who is played by Fiona Shaw, whose acting career has seen her in many places, but most notably in the Harry Potter franchise where she played Harry’s pompous Aunt Petunia.
In a recent article by StarWars.com, Fiona Shaw gave some great insight into her character, her values, and her relationship with her son Cassian.

The older woman we see on Ferrix has been through a lot, including the formation of her relationship with her son Cassian Andor, which Shaw spoke at length about what this relationship means to her character.
Coming across young Kassa on Kenari, Maarva took him in, raising him as her own under the name Cassian Andor. As Shaw explains, their bond benefits them both. In her interview, she said:
“It was great to play those scenes in Kenari. Like all these relationships, you get a feeling that Maarva may have saved the boy, but the boy may also have saved Maarva. It’s given her purpose. It’s given her love. It’s given her someone to love and to worry about for the next 10 or 20 years while he grew up.”

As both have been through hard times, their strong relationship is complex, and the family drama within the show intrigues Shaw the most. Shaw shares that while it is a good relationship, it does not come without its complications, while also expressing immense love for Andor star Diego Luna.
