First Images Released by Universal Pictures for Upcoming 'Wicked' Movie
Having recently announced the release date for the film adaptation of Wicked, the 2003 musical that became an instant hit, Universal Pictures has now shared images of the two leads as their characters.
Cynthia Erivo as the green-skinned girl who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West features in the left image. In the black outfit of the witch with her back to the camera, looking like she’s about to zoom away from the tower she is within. Ariana Grande as the pretty, popular girl who becomes the Good Witch of the North features in the right image. In a pink dress, she runs up the stairs of what seems to be the same tower.

With a story set to be told across two films, Wicked is currently in production. Both films will be shot together, keeping as much of the musical intact. Something that director Jon M. Chu was very particular about, saying that “it would be impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it.”
Describing any cuts they tried to plan as “fatal compromises to the source material,” he says that two films gives more space to “tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprises to the journeys of these beloved characters.”
Joining Erivo and Grande as part of the cast are Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible – the headmistress of the university they both attend, Johnathan Bailey as Fiyero – a prince who loves both witches, and Jeff Goldblum as The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The first film is set to arrive on November 27, 2024, with the second coming roughly a year later.
