First reactions to Kenji Kamiyama’s animated The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim film are in, showing promise for the upcoming anime. Presenting a work-in-progress version of the film at France’s Annecy Film Festival, director Kenji Kamiyama’s vision of marrying The Lord of the Rings and anime is proving successful.

Many people at the screening took to the internet to heap praise on the beginning stages of the film. It’s incredibly difficult to find a negative review; at the time of writing, one could not be located, even as a contrasting perspective. Producer Jason DeMarco stated that the presentation was only for the Annecy Film Festival, and will not be widely released.

Twitter user @mpmorales wrote (translated from French): “Two scenes were shown (one of them, the opening, not finished) and the producers commented on the importance of trying to unite the world of Lord of the Rings movies with anime ones. And it really was an interesting combination. It reminded me a bit of Castlevania.

From @rafaelmotomayor: “LordOfTheRings War of the Rohirrim is already shooting to the top of my most anticipated movies of 2024. The (very short and unfinished) footage shown at #Annecy2023 looks fantastic. This is 100% in line with the original trilogy while also very much an anime. Can’t wait.”

Succession’s Brian Cox will provide the voice of Helm Hammerhand, and Miranda Otto will reprise her role as Eowyn and also serve as narrator for the anime. Other cast members include Sean Dooley, Lorraine Ashbourne, Benjamin Wainwright, and Luke Pasqualino. Joseph Chou will join Kamiyama as producer and director.

The story, set 183 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, tells the story of Helm Hammerhand, legendary King of Rohan who must defend against an army of Dunlendings.

The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim will release in theaters on April 12, 2024.
