The 2023 Academy Awards kicked off with well-deserved (even if they were expected) wins. Emotions ran high throughout the ceremony with several surprise wins and endearing speeches.

The first win went to Netflix and Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio for Best Animated Feature, making it the first streaming service to win in the category. Everything Everywhere All at Once swept the Best Supporting category with Ke Huy Quan (Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom) and Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween). They were shown embracing during the commercial break, still red-eyed from sharing tears and smiles.

Ruth E. Carter of Marvel’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever took home the statuette for Best Costume Design, making her the first Black woman to win 2 Oscars.

As always, the Academy Awards stage was filled with stunning performances of the Best Original Song nominees. Lady Gaga, who will star alongside Joaquin Phoenix in Joker: Folie a Deux, sang a stripped-down version of her “Hold My Hand” from Top Gun: Maverick. Rihanna sang “Lift Me Up” from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. After an electrifying dance number, RRR’s “Natuu Natuu” got Best Original Song, making it the first Indian film to win an Oscar.

Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front took home several awards for Best Cinematography, Best International Feature Film, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score. James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water took home one Oscar for Best Visual Effects despite being nominated for four Oscars including Best Picture.

Everything Everywhere All at Once continued its wins by snagging Oscars for Best Editing, Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh (making her the first Asian actress to win in the category), and Best Picture. Star Wars and Indiana Jones star Harrison Ford announced the winner for Best Picture and had a sweet reunion moment with Ke Huy Quan, who played Short Round to Ford’s Indiana Jones.

All eyes were on the Best Actor category this year, where Brendan Fraser, Colin Farrell, and Austin Butler were all in a tight race for the top spot. Fraser prevailed, earning a standing ovation and many, many tears of joy. The win marked his triumphant return to Hollywood after several years out of the spotlight.
