Dead Space, one of the best-selling horror video game franchises, turned 14 in October of last year, and in just under two weeks, the remake launches on current consoles and PC. John Carpenter, a legendary horror filmmaker, would seem like a perfect fit to make a film adaptation for one of the best-selling horror games in history. As it turns out, John Carpenter is a huge fan of the series. In an interview with Game Informer back in 2013, Carpenter lauded the game and mused at how it could be turned into an excellent movie. Fast forward to today, and IGN reported that Carpenter let slip in an interview with Variety that there may be one in the works. Unfortunately, he’s not been contacted to direct.

In the interview, he mentioned when looking into some new digital cameras, he let out he would love to do the movie. That spread and  when people asked when he was making it, Carpenter said “I’m not gonna do it. I think they already have another director involved.” (Variety, 2023) He went on to mention the remake coming in a couple of weeks. He didn’t indicate who in particular has been picked to do the movie, but if he has some kind of insider information and had a little Freudian slip, it looks like there could be a Dead Space movie on the horizon. Its story could do particularly well as a movie if adapted, much like the upcoming The Last of Us adaptation on HBO.

RELATED:

Dead Space is a 2008 horror game about an engineer named Isaac. He’s on a maintenance mission to repair the massive ship, the Ishimura. His girlfriend, Nicole, was the chief medical officer of the Ishimura. Communication with the Ishimura had stopped, and Isaac quickly learns the reason why. Everyone aboard has turned into grotesque, twisted forms called Necromorphs. Throughout the game, Isaac pieces together what happened, and tries to solve the mystery behind the appearance of the Necromorphs, figure out if his girlfriend is still alive, and just survive. It enjoyed widespread praise and acclaim and spawned two sequels and a few spinoff games.

The remake launches on January 27 on Xbox, Playstation 5, and PC.
