As the MCU gears up to launch Phase 6, Fantastic Four is making some changes. John Friedman, who lent his writing skills to Avatar: The Way of Water will replace the writing team of Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer.

Kaplan and Springer teamed up to co-write The Last of the Great Romantics and Bert and Arnie’s Guide to Friendship before landing jobs on the Fantastic Four team in September 2022.

The replacement, Friedman, is no stranger to the sci-fi genre. He served on the writing teams for War of the Worlds, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Files, Terminator: Dark Fate, Foundation, and Snowpierecer along with some future Avatar sequels.

The change in team may signal a change in tone for the film. The movie’s initial release date was November 2024, but currently, the film is scheduled to release on February 14, 2025. However, depending on the amount of work the director Matt Shakam has in store for Friedman, it’s possible the movie could be delayed again. With several failed Fantastic Four movies still fresh in viewers’ minds, Marvel Studios is under a lot of pressure to get this one right.

Audiences saw a small hint at what the MCU Fantastic Four team could be when Reed Richards, played by John Krasinski, appeared in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. A full-fledged Fantastic Four movie could be the spark Marvel needs to bring crowds flocking back to theaters.
