The final moments of the Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revolution saw the reveal of a major villain, teasing not only a third season of Kevin Smith’s MOTU series but the inevitable arrival of a crossover that would be 40 years in the making. However, since this reveal, there has been nothing but radio silence on whether a third season was in the works or how the series would handle its reveal, but a recent interview between Smith and AnyGoodFilms has shed some light on the possibility of Masters of the Universe Season 3.

The post-credit scene of Revolution’s finale introduced Despara, the daughter of Hordak, voiced by Grey DeLisle. Most fans, however, will recognize Despara by her true identity: Princess Adora, aka She-Ra, the twin sister of Prince Adam aka He-Man. From this point on, a She-Ra and He-Man crossover should be inevitable, right?

The answer, however, isn’t as cut and dry as Smith discussed in his interview with AnyGoodFilms. During the interview, Smith stated that for this crossover, and by extension a third season to happen, ‘has everything to do with whether two titans of media wanna let each other play with their toys.’

One major point of discussion with Masters of the Universe is Mattel’s complex relationship with the TV rights to She-Ra, which is owned by DreamWorks as a consequence of a deal with Filmmation in the 1980s. As a consequence, She-Ra could no longer appear in Masters of the Universe media, and vice-versa. This separation is why the 2018 reboot ‘She-Ra & The Princesses of Power’ avoided references to He-Man outside of subtle references and why Masters of the Universe: Revelation and Revolution did the same before introducing Despara, who is not officially owned by DreamWorks.

If Mattel and DreamWorks can play nice and broker a licensing deal for She-Ra, it would open the door for the Siblings of Power to reunite in television and film and, in turn, would allow Smith to tell the story he wants with a third season of Masters of the Universe. The final decision, however, now rests in the hands of these two media titans.
