Netflix has just dropped a new trailer for Castlevania: Nocturne’s second season!

A spinoff of Netflix’s successful Castlevania anime series, Nocturne follows the vampire hunting escapades of Richter Belmont with assistance from fellow hunters and Dracula’s son, Alucard. Nocturne’s new season looks to raise the stakes established in the first season as Erzsebet Báthory continues her rise in power. Briefly summarized in the description box of the trailer, Báthory is now seemingly invincible and seeks to take the full power of the goddess Sekhmet so she can spread endless darkness and terror across the entire globe. Standing in her way is our team of heroes who must race to stop her.

The trailer opens up with a feeling of hopelessness. A graveyard and its markers are looked over by a weary figure, and a sad, exhausted voice speaks of total loss and a lack of light as crescent moons loom over the landscape, hinting at Erzsebet Báthory’s plan to plunge the world into darkness.

However, this feeling is abruptly shaken off by the trailer’s score dramatically changing tempo and characters speaking of hope and engaging in fierce combat against vampires and other monsters. Alucard speaks of needing a Belmont to defeat Báthory and claims Trevor Belmont (Richter’s ancestor and cast member of the main Castlevania series) would be proud of the sarcasm still in his bloodline, though he also wryly admits to the irritating nature of the family dynasty.

The time of Revolutionary France looks to still be playing a notable role in the story, as several shots show human soldiers fighting vampires and monsters (often losing quite badly), and one dynamic shot shows the summoning of a huge draconic creature in a cathedral, or perhaps as it is known in this time, “a Temple of Reason.”

Castlevania: Nocturne’s second season arrives on Netflix on January 16th.
