The young budding actor began appearing in contemporary and period dramas. When he got his first speaking role, he noticed something was different about the senior actors’ performances compared to his own. He realized that this was because he hadn’t studied acting. Umezu enrolled in an actors’ training school and then attended NHK’s film acting seminar, where he was encouraged to pursue voice acting. His first voice acting role was Dr. Hyblow in the 1982 anime Cybot Robotichi. He worked for NPS Theatre Arts Vision and eventually joined 81 Produce. Umezu’s anime roles include Diamante in One Piece, Earth in Zatch Bell, Amachi in Naruto, Barry the Chopper in Fullmetal Alchemitst: Brotherhood, and Battera in the 2011 Hunter x Hunter.
