SEGA May Be The Next Video Game Publisher To Elevate Prices To $70, Following Sony And Activision

It seems the price of the next Sonic the Hedgehog title may be higher than Sonic Frontiers. During a Q&A session following the release of SEGA Sammy’s full-year earnings in April, CEO Haruki Satomi and CFO Koichi Fukazawa had this to say when asked about the possibility of raising the prices of their games to $70:
“In the global marketplace, AAA game titles for console have been sold at $59.99 for many years, but titles sold at $69.99 have appeared in the last year…We would like to review the prices of titles that we believe are commensurate with price increases, while also keeping an eye on market conditions.”

SEGA would be joining other companies that have made similar decisions regarding the prices of their titles. In August of 2020, TakeTwo’s NBA2K1 became the first current-gen title to be released at $70 at launch, and Sony and Activision soon followed suit by charging $70 for their big titles. Other companies, such as Square Enix and EA, have also jumped on this trend, and even Nintendo has experimented with raising the prices of their games starting with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom being released at $70. Whether this is going to be an industry standard is yet to be seen, but given the recent trend, it does seem likely that future titles may be costing the player more than they have in the past.
