Several Sonic titles may be getting modern-day refreshes. SEGA Japan president and COO Yukio Sugino mentioned in a recent interview with Famitsu that several SEGA IPs may be getting a reboot while mentioning the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise specifically. Sugino mentioned that he was delighted by the recent success of Sonic Frontiers and the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 film, stating reportedly:

“That… makes me happy, and I was also happy to receive a lot of messages, mainly from users in North America, such as 'I'm very happy that Sonic is heading in the right direction.”

Sugino also mentioned the upcoming Samba de Amigo: Party Central, and while he noted that the game is not a reboot of the Samba de Amigo franchise, he did state he was open to the possibility of producing reboots, remakes, and reboot-like features in new games for other SEGA properties, pointing to the upcoming Sonic Superstars as a return to form for the Sonic franchise, stating its "a return to 2D action, and although it is a new game,” and that he “would like to implement reboot-like measures as well" in future titles. Full reboots and remakes are being considered for every SEGA IP, including Sonic. Sugino stated:

"Of course, we have to do new things, but as with all IPs, we don't have new works or reboots…This is the best way to do this IP'. 'Sonic' is also SEGA's signature IP, and in parallel with the new game, we are considering reboots and remakes."

This is a rather interesting development for the Sonic franchise, with it clearly having one red shoe in the past and another in the future, particularly with the recent release of Sonic Prime season two on Netflix.
