Disney’s final trailer for the prequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, has dropped ready for its Christmas release. Blue Ivy Carter (Kiara) appears to hold her own against the more experienced voices around her as she sets the scene for the story, which will be told in a series of flashbacks.  We get our first look at Zazu, but John Oliver has not returned. The host of the Last Week Tonight Show has had several run-ins with Disney, so that’s not a huge surprise. Replacing him is Preston Nyman, who Brits might know better as the voice of Ben from the popular kids show Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom.  John Kani is back as Rafiki after he took over the role in 2019 (Robert Guillaume sadly passed away two years before the live-action was released), and from the trailer, it looks as if he will be getting a large chunk of screen time.

One noticeable difference between the Mufasa: The Lion King trailer and The Lion King live action is how expressive the faces of the animals are. Disney appears to have listened to feedback.

No franchise would be complete without a Mikkelsen brother, and Mads sounds incredible as the fearsome white lion, Kiros. Fans will be wondering if the white pride is a nod to the Japanese animation and manga Kimba the White Lion. When The Lion King was released in 1994, Disney was accused of drawing heavily from the work.

Mufasa’s plot appears to be a classic hero’s journey, but we’re all wondering how the movie is going to engineer Taka’s (Scar) fall from grace, especially since he appears the good guy in these clips.  The movie lands in theatres on 20th December 2024, so it’s not long before we find out.
