Nintendo Switch Pirate Finds His Bragging Could Cost Him $7.5 Million
Streamer and content creator Jesse Keighin is facing legal action from Nintendo that could result in him paying up to $7.5 million.Keighin is known for streaming and showing himself playing multiple Nintendo Switch games before they officially release, most recently showing off his access to Mario and Luigi: Brothership, the latest Mario RPG to come out of the company.
This activity has obviously earned the ire of Nintendo’s lawyers, who have recently been pushing hard to stop emulation, prevent leaks, and the pirating of the company’s games. Two notable Switch emulators were hit with legal warnings this year alone, causing them to then shut down.
However, Keighin is a unique case, both for how much money he stands to pay Nintendo (the high sum was calculated by Nintendo seeking $150,000 in damages for each of the 50 times they state Keighin used emulations of their games) but also for his brazen attitude regarding his and the company’s actions. “[I] can do this all day” he allegedly said in a letter to Nintendo, and after Nintendo caused his YouTube channel and other accounts to be shut down, he supposedly further commented that he would help people find copies of Switch emulators to help them pirate games.
Keighin may join the ranks of those like Gary Bowser, who was successfully sued by Nintendo for piracy of their games several years ago and is now forced to try and pay back an ungodly sum that is well beyond his financial means to repay. We will have to wait and see how this particular lawsuit shakes out in the coming months or years.
