'The Shining' Actress, Shelley Duvall Has Passed Away At The Age Of 75

Shelley Duvall, star of Kubrick’s The Shining passed away in her sleep on the 11th July 2024 from complications related to diabetes. She was at her home in Texas surrounded by her family in her final hours.

Duvall took up acting after being invited to screen test, after meeting director Robert Altman at a party. Duvall had never left her home state when she landed her first role in Brewster McCloud. She went on to become one of the most iconic faces of the 70s and early 80s starring in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall as Rolling Stone reporter, Pam. She won critical acclaim for her performance in Altman’s 3 Women as well as her children’s story series Shelley Duvall's Bedtime Stories.

She reduced her workload in the 90s and 2000s for mental health reasons, but still made frequent cameos in shows like Fraiser and LA. Law. Her last picture was the 2023 Edward Furlong (John Connor from Terminator 2) psychological horror, The Forest Hills.

Dan Gilroy, her partner of thirty-five years posted this comment on his social media:

“My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley”

Shelley Duvall will be known for her ability to stand out on screen, to add complexity to trite characters, and for those unmistakeable eyes that followed the audience through the fourth wall. She will be sorely missed.
