'Wicked: Part 1' Trailer Released
We’ve finally got a sneak peek of the movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Wicked. The trailer for part one shows Ariana Grande as the ‘popular’ Glinda in her bubble. There are snippets of the outstanding vocals of Oscar-nominated Cynthia Erivo (Harriet) who is playing Elphaba. The star-studded cast also sees Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard and Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero. The land of OZ seems to reference the original 1939 adaption of L. Frank Baum’s book as well as the Broadway staging.
RELATED:
Wicked the musical is based on a novel by author Gregory Maguire and has had long runs on Broadway and on London’s West End since it debuted at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco in 2003. Wicked has won three Tonys and a Grammy and is still one of the most popular shows around. Universal is no doubt expecting the ‘theater kids’ to rally for this movie.
This isn’t director Jon M Chu’s first musical. He directed the cult adaption In The Heights and helmed a number of the Step Up films. He also worked on the LXD (League of Extraordinary Dancers) franchise. Chu knows how to shoot fast-paced, high-energy dance sequences so this should make for an exciting adaption.
Wicked Part 1 will be out in theatres on Thanksgiving of this year. Part 2 is expected to drop towards the end of 2025.
