Writer and producer Roberto Orci sadly lost his battle with kidney disease and passed away at his home in Los Angeles on 25th February 2025. He was just fifty-one years of age. Orci was named by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the fifty most influential Latinos in Hollywood.
Orci was born in Mexico City but moved to the US at age ten. He met his long-time writing partner Alex Kurtzman seven years later, at school in California. The pair bonded over their love of the movie Sex, Lies and Videotape. The duo were first hired for Kevin Sobo’s Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and went on to work on Xena: Warrior Princess.
His brother, also a successful writer in Hollywood, was the executive story editor/producer for the J.J. Abrams series, Alias. Roberto Orci, JR Orci, and Kurtzman all came together on this hit, which paved the way for Roberto’s first movie screenplay, the ScarJo flick The Island. It was on this movie that Orci was introduced to Michael Bay for the first time, and two years later, he would be called up again for Transformers. Orci would go on to shape the entire franchise. Abrams was impressed by his time with the Orci Kutzman double act on the set of Alias and recruited them for the Star Trek reboot. Thus, Orci found himself embroiled in another franchise.

In April 2014, the writing partnership evolved. Roberto Orci worked on Star Trek: Beyond solo (until he was replaced by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung), and the pair moved into producing. He was executive producer on Tom Cruise's The Mummy, as well as the Hawaii Five-0 reboot and many other projects.
But behind the scenes, Roberto Orci struggled with alcohol addiction. In his very public divorce, harrowing tapes surfaced of him threatening his wife with physical and sexual assault. The lawsuit and countersuit were still pending at his time of death.
