In the history of Star Wars Legends, the New Jedi Order novels series was perhaps one of the most consequential and dramatic turning points of post-Return of the Jedi Star Wars Legends novels. One YouTube creator, Kyle Meisch, known simply as holonet on YouTube, has been working on and is set to unveil a massive documentary retrospective of the entire novel series, written by several authors, over the next few weeks.

The documentary celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the novel series, starting with the first novel in the series, Vector Prime, and ending with the last one, The Unifying Force, and covering everything in between. The documentary will also cover some additional novellas released throughout the series, as well as a Star Wars Legends prequel-era novel, Rogue Planet, which foreshadows an important player in resolving the conflict with the antagonists of the series.

The seven-part documentary, entitled Crafting an Epic: The Making of the New Jedi Order, will, according to Meisch, cover material gathered “from over 120 interviews, including lost and brand new interviews” and “provide a deep dive into the bestselling series.” Meisch has already completed a short trailer for his YouTube channel for the documentary, parts of which will be released weekly on his channel, starting on January 7, 2025.

For those who may be unfamiliar with the plotline of the New Jedi Order series, an implacable pain-worshipping alien race with advanced biotechnology and impervious to the Force, known as the Yuuzhan Vong appears and lays siege to the New Republic and threatens Luke Skywalker’s New Jedi Order, which they consider an affront to their religious beliefs.

The series draws on events and storylines from earlier Star Wars Legends novels and includes classic Star Wars characters such as Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, and Chewbacca. It includes several surviving characters introduced in other earlier Star Wars legend novels such as Mara Jade, the Solo children, Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin. It also introduces new characters such as the Yuuzhan Vong and their allies.

The New Jedi Order novel series, unlike many Star Wars legends novels before it, had significant far-reaching consequences for the Star Wars galaxy and its characters including the deaths of several characters, most notably a classic Star Wars character, the destruction of entire planets, the near-genocide of alien races, and the downfall of the New Republic in Star Wars Legends. Furthermore, the series had personal long-term consequences for the survivors. It also reshaped the political landscape of the galaxy in a significant way for future Star Wars Legends novels and comics.

It also had some implications in terms of retroactively explaining, in Timothy Zahn’s prequel-era novel, Outbound Flight, one of the late Emperor Palpatine’s motivations for bringing down the extragalactic joint Republic-Jedi Order expedition, Outbound Flight, and forming his Galactic Empire, specifically militarizing the galaxy to prepare to fight the Vong in the future. George Lucas also reportedly had tentative plans to introduce the Vong into the Star Wars Canon via The Clone Wars series. However, such plans never came to fruition for one reason or another.

The release schedule of the documentary series is as follows:
