Could Short Round and Ouroboros Be Heading To A Galaxy Far, Far Away? Ke Huy Quan Certainly Hopes So

Ke Huy Quan enjoys his spot in the limelight after having been "ignored" by Hollywood for decades. The 52 years old actor, who started his career as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and then as Richard "Data" Wang in The Goonies, recently joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as O.B./Ouroboros, the tech genius of the Time Variance Authority in season two of Loki.

But there is another franchise under the Disney banner that Quan has set his sights on.

RELATED:

During this year's award season, where he won both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once, he was reunited not only with Harrison Ford but also with Kathleen Kennedy, who was associate producer on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

“I was shameless when I saw Kathy!” admits Quan. “I went up to give her a big hug. And I said, ‘Kathy, Kathy, please put me in the Star Wars universe!’ And what’s so great about it, if you think about it, it’s all under the Disney family, you know? So, I was lucky to be Short Round, which is also Disney. And, now MCU, and, you know, I want to stay in the family. It’s great.”

Although Lucasfilm hasn't made any announcement yet to cast Quan in one of its upcoming projects, there are certainly quite a few options. Next year's life-action series Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte have wrapped filming and are in post-production, so these ships have sailed, but there is a slight chance that he could appear in season 2 of Andor, probably not as a villain, but rather as a friendly, good-hearted and slightly nerdy technician for one of the rebel-cells if his role as O.B. is any indication.

Another, more realistic, chance for Quan to join the galaxy, far, far away, would be to become a part of the voice cast of 2024's animated series The Bad Batch (season 3) or Tales of the Jedi (season 2). Again, a teacher/mentor role would probably be more fitting than that of a soldier, or fighter, but anything is possible in animation.

And while the time setting of these projects - the Prequel era - might preclude Quan from reprising his role in one of the upcoming Star Wars life-action projects, which take place after the events of Return of the Jedi, a job as a voice actor could still be the launching pad for a (bigger) role in maybe season 2 of Ahosoka, season four or The Mandalorian or one of the cinematic Star Wars features that are currently in early stages of preproduction.

In any case, if Lucasfilm hires Quan (and there's no reason why they shouldn't), it will most likely not just be a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo but a much more memorable role.

Aside from Star Wars, Quan also hopes to reprise his role as Ouroboros in the MCU:

“I haven’t had any conversations. I love O.B. I love playing him,” he said. “It makes me so happy that the audience is responding to this character. When I first got the call from Kevin Feige and he asked me to come join the MCU family, I asked him, ‘Is this a one-time thing? Or are we going to be able to see more of him?’ Because I loved him on the pages. And he says, ‘Ke, we always give what the fans want.'”

And then there is also the possibility of playing an adult version of Short Round:

“I love the character of Short Round. He’s funny and courageous and saves Indy’s ass. If Disney or Lucasfilm ever come to me and say, ‘We want to do a Short Round spinoff,’ I’m there man!” I love that character so much and it would just be incredible to revisit so many years later.”
