5 Things We Expect From The Second Run Of Russell T Davies In 'Doctor Who'
A new era of Doctor Who is about to begin as Russell T Davies is set to return as the series showrunner starting this year. Russell T Davies brought Doctor Who back to TV in 2005 and helmed it until 2008. Four Doctors and two more showrunners later much has changed since he left the program all those years ago. Fans are excited to see the return of the legend back to help the new era and take the Doctor in hopefully new and exciting directions. With his return, many are speculating just what he might bring to the show again now that he’s in charge, what sort of new things he will include, but also what old things as well. With this in mind, here are the top 5 things fans expect Russell T Davies to do in his second run as showrunner of Doctor Who.
Hello, World!
5. New Aliens
During Russell T Davies’s first run of Doctor Who, we saw the return of some old villains and the creation of many new iconic aliens. During his first tenure, creatures like the Ood and Raxacoricofallapatorian came to be fan favorites. These famous aliens, some allies, and some enemies expanded the Doctor Who universe giving it more fun creatures for fans to latch onto and, in some cases, be afraid of. After all, what is Doctor Who, if not scary, monsters that must be fought and defeated by our favorite Time Lord in a blue police box?

4. Ongoing Storylines
When Doctor Who started, the Davies era had an interesting habit of being able to make overarching story plots throughout his entire run. From the Time War to the growing family of companions and friends the Doctor had managed to create with his adventures, Russell weaved a fascinating web of continuity within his seasons. He created an overarching story of a survivor who was feeling the guilt of what he had to do to his people at the end of a tragic war. Hopefully, Davies can weave new storylines throughout the series, giving us more stories to enjoy. Perhaps new epic storylines for the Doctor to endure that involve meeting new friends, defeating enemies new and old alike, and a grand plot that goes for not only one season but the entire tenure of Russel’s second run of Doctor Who.
3. Diverse Companions
During his tenure from 2005-08, Russell tried to bring quite a diverse cast of characters to be allies of The Doctor, from Donna to Rose to Mickey to Martha Jones. This year alone, we will be getting a whole bunch of new characters and cast members joining and rejoining the Doctor. Many of them will be from diverse and unique backgrounds that add that extra bit of flavor to the Doctor’s universe. Hopefully, Russell, as someone with a diverse background himself, will continue to press for good representation across the board as the series continues, much as Chris Chibnall did in his tenure.
2. Classic Villains
Cybermen, The Master; it was during Russell’s first tenure that these classics returned and were reinvented to fit a modern-day setting. Doctor Who has a plethora of ancient villains that have still yet to be untapped or reimagined for the modern day. Back in the day, Jon Simm’s The Master captured the imagination of a new generation of Who fans, bringing an iconic villain back to the screen. One can hope that in the new era, Russell will decide to bring back several classical villains from the old series and give them a fresh coat of paint.
1. Daleks
When it comes to classic Doctor Who villains, there is no other enemy Russell T Davies loves more than the Daleks. During his first tenure as Doctor Who showrunner Russell always had an episode dedicated to the Daleks. During most of his seasons, the Daleks tended to be the main enemy during his season finales. During the last official season of Doctor Who, Davies ran Davros, the Dalek creator, and his legion of Daleks attacked Earth and faced off against the Doctor and his large array of allies he had made during the previous seasons. Many suspect that the Daleks may be back in Russell’s era to play a significant part in his next era as the big bad of the Doctor Who universe.
Whether it be old faces, new faces, or long epic storylines, many are excited to see what Russell will bring to the table. How long he will stay as showrunner this time is hard to say, but no matter what, it will still be a fresh era, even if it’s a returning face taking the lead.
