Composer Bear McCreary pulled out all the stops for season one of Amazon’s The Rings of Power, but the season two soundtrack shows he still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Since this season will be the first adaptation of the city of Rhûn, McCreary brought in a Bulgarian women’s choir to capture the essence of the desert landscape. The composer called it beautiful, haunting, and strange. Worldwide head of music at Amazon MGM Studios, Bob Bowen praised McCreary's work, “[Bear’s] use of innovative musical approaches, combined with his deep understanding of Tolkien, provides a unique world-building for this series.”

Some fans noticed in the first season that Halbrand’s theme was actually Sauron’s theme played backward. In the new season with Sauron’s identity revealed, the theme will be played forward to “personify” Sauron. Reacting to fans’ discovery, McCreary said, “I like to encode messages into the score. Now that I know people are digging, I can be even more subtle. Recent trailers show that the conflict between Galadriel and Sauron will be a major plot of the season, so McCreary worked to make those two themes crash.

Although the score is composed in a former London church turned recording studio, McCreary will also mix it on his phone to ensure it sounds good in any environment. McCreary recalled the secrecy that was necessary even at home so his 7-year-old daughter wouldn’t spread the word. Despite that secret, he was glad to have his daughter as one of his biggest fans. McCreary explained, “My daughter watched the show multiple times. She loved it. I felt so proud that I could be part of the stories that bring my daughter into Middle-Earth. Fans can tune into McCreary’s score with the release of the soundtrack on August 23 and the premiere of season two of Rings of Power on August 29.
