After Its Post-Community Day Tease, Meet Gimmighoul, The Newest Coined Pokémon For ‘Scarlet’ And ‘Violet’
It felt like 2018 all over again following the Dratini Community Day Classic in Pokémon Go this weekend. A little never-before-seen (okay, barely-before-seen) Pokémon started following us around. Unlike Meltan, who appeared for 30 minutes after Chikorita Community Day as a Ditto disguise, the player couldn’t engage in battle with it, but it was following them around following the obtaining of mysterious Paldean coins from PokéStops that turned golden. On Sunday, fans got the new Pokémon’s name and learned a lot (but not everything) about it.
The 21st Pokémon revealed in the leadup to Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is called Gimmighoul. These Pokémon either like to hide in coin chests or roam freely with a single coin held by their tail. They have dowsing machine-like antennae, and the ones who stay in the chests manipulate people into fetching coins for them. Jacq, a biology and homeroom teacher at the player’s school in the new games, and Professor Willow from Go name the Chest and Roaming forms of Gimmighoul. Only the Chest form has data on it currently: it’s a pure Ghost-type with the ability Rattled, a move introduced in the Generation V games where a Pokémon’s speed is increased one stage if it is hit by a Bug-, Ghost-, or Dark-type damaging move. It was shown using Protect, Shadow Ball, and possibly Power Gem.

It was also announced that Go and Scarlet and Violet would be able to be linked sometime in 2023. What exactly this entails is unknown, but that does not mean Pokémon can be transferred directly between the two. Pokémon Home is still very much the conduit for that. However, Roaming Form Gimmighoul will be made available in Go once the link is made, and it seems to be exclusive to that platform. Even with ten or eleven days until release, that isn’t all for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as leaks aside (yes they’ve started), another 9 AM trailer release is set for Tuesday, November 8. It will likely show off Jacq and Willow’s full report on Gimmighoul (as promised on its page) and likely be the last before the November 18 release on the Nintendo Switch.
