Characters of the Marvel Cinematic Universe usually come together for the large-scale events that are the Avengers films. In an interview with Variety, Benedict Cumberbatch accidentally revealed that Doctor Strange would not be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday. Upon realising that, he shared a few other details.

Though “the character not aligning with this part of the story” is how Marvel sees Doctor Strange for Doomsday, it is a different story for the events that follow. Cumberbatch continues with the hints, saying that Doctor Strange is “quite central to where things might go.” Which appears to include a third stand-alone film for the character. Things are collaborative at Marvel, Cumberbatch reveals, with the actors of characters having some say in exploring the characters.

“They are very open to discussing where to go next. Who do you want to write and direct the next one? What part of the comic lore do you want to explore so that Strange can keep evolving? He’s a very rich character to play. He’s a complex, contradictory, troubled human who’s got these extraordinary abilities, so there’s potent stuff to mess about with.”

Phase 6 of the MCU had to change course when Jonathan Majors was convicted of assault in 2023. Kang was meant to have a major role in the then-named Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but with his firing, a lot of plans changed. Such plans brought in Doctor Doom as the main antagonist that would end The Multiverse Saga of the MCU. A change that brings larger relevance to The Fantastic Four: First Steps starting off Phase 6 on July 25 this year. Avengers: Doomsday is slated for a May 1, 2026 release, with Avengers: Secret Wars having a May 7, 2027 date.
