Director Of 'Deadpool 3' Claims One Scene Was Inspired By 'Return Of The Jedi'
Shawn Levy is taking inspiration from Star Wars for his Deadpool 3 movie. Levy recalled watching Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader talking in The Return of the Jedi. Vader taunts Luke, “If you will not turn to the dark side, then perhaps your sister will.” Levy explains his experience watching that scene, “It was dead quiet. Pin-drop silence. Suddenly Vader has pushed the wrong button. Luke comes screaming out of the shadows and just goes to town in a lightsaber battle against Vader. The way that felt: The forty seconds of stillness from the audience, then the spectacle and emotion, is seared not just in my eyeballs but in my heart.”
Levy hopes to create a similar event in the latest Deadpool installment which is set to bring Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool and Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Levy said, “When the tone is singular, when the themes are resonant, when the experience is connective when the audience is reminded that the world is far bigger than ourselves, it creates a forever memory.”

To capture the same energy of the iconic moment between Darth Vader and Luke, Levy pulled up the scene on his phone and studied everything from how it was photographed, how it was blocked, and its framing and tempo. In the related scene for Deadpool 3, Levy told his stunt and action team, “Guys, this is the Jedi moment.
Levy’s connection to Star Wars is more than a tribute scene in a Marvel film; he’s scheduled to direct an upcoming Star Wars movie. Kathleen Kennedy requested that Levy bring his story and tone to the new Star Wars story. Speaking of both films, Levy said, “The experience that I’m currently having with Marvel on Deadpool is showing me firsthand that it is indeed really possible to feel empowered and personal about making a movie within a universe that is bigger than any one film. My Deadpool movie is turning out to be exactly what Ryan [Reynolds] and I had hoped when we started off. So I’m going into the development of my Star Wars movie with a similar optimism, and faith that my instincts will be allowed to lead the way.” Deadpool 3 is currently scheduled for a May 3, 2024 release, but the development of the SAG-AFTRA strike may change the release schedule.
